My parents are have issues due to a very old credit card account. They came to an agreement to pay about half the balance ($4000) with a collection agency about 10 years ago. They paid as agreed and thought they were done with the issue.
Well, about a year ago they get a call from a collection agency wanting to collect on this account again. They say the balance is over $10,000!!
My dad explained that it was paid off many years ago. The agent said they bought this debt from the last colection agency and that they are liable for it.
Unfortunately, they don't have any cancelled cheques or anything because it was so long ago. Also, the debt isn't showing up on their Equifax bureau.
I told them to tell the collection agency to prove how you owe this money and to not pay a dime until they do. But they got tired of getting the phone calls and started sending cheques after the agency said that they only had to pay a "portion" to clear the debt. (still about 4000...again)
Any ideas what to do? Did they screw up their statute of limitations by starting to pay this again?
I believe in paying debts,,,however they are on a limited income and have already paid the agreed upon amount once before through a different company.
Thanks
