well, I am currently a collection agent at CBV collection services and am slightly shocked at the unfair representation being shown of us in the industry. I am not saying that we are all angels but not all of us are out to make your lives a living hell.
I understand that in some cases it is a computing error, but however you are not going to make me want to fight your case if the first time I contact you you state "How dare this go into collections? this is F***ing bulls***, no you listen to me you stupid b****" etc etc. Sometimes you should listen to these collection agents phoning you, I have gotten several amounts settle for the dispute that the debtor felt they owed.
Now that being said I know several of these collectors that are what we call the hard ball collectors and the reason that they stay employeed is the simple fact that they get the job done despite whatever means they did to get that job done.
And if you refuse to return our phone calls what can we do but call more? or to your place of employment? If we slack off in letting you know about your outstanding debt then when you get a credit file pulled and find out that you have something in collections then you'll call in to bitch that we haven't properly informed you. Either way, we're the bad guys for the simple fact that for whatever reason you neglected your responibilities.
I'm not saying that I never lets say missed a payment on my cell phone or credit card, but the fact of the matter is I dealt with it BEFORE it went into collections. I understand that life happens but if you don't want to deal with collection agencies then perhaps the easiest way to do so is to not be placed in one.
end of story
