I believe that he just is not at all legally savvy. He has not nor will he ever ask me for money. I know this sounds bad, with it being legal aid and him being convicted, but he's not a scary character. He went to jail for reasons many people actually applaud him for. He really hurt somebody who really hurt a nephew in an unforgiveable way, and he's the one who ended up in jail because he did some serious damage to the scum. Hopefully you can read in between those lines.

If he keeps avoiding the paperwork issue then something else is up. This is my opinion; if he mentions that he needs money I would run in the other direction fast. I would suggest to him that he should consider bankruptcy.

No, not at all. This is a discussion we've had and each time I tell him something does not make sense. A big chunk of the story is missing, and I wonder if he signed something agreeing to owe legal aid (AFTER the trial was over and before he surrendered?) but not realizing what it was. Again, why would they want someone who was unemployed and about to go to jail to repay? He had nothing but a heavy TV, a sick cat, and a 15 year old clunker.

I'm going to ask him for the papers he signed and if need be call Legal Aid myself and try to understand what is going on.

He couldn't have. I know he wasn't working and that he had no money. I know this because I took him because I had extra room in my house. He could no longer afford rent. I also took his cat. He was broke.

I don't know what's going on. I'm going to ask him for the forms again and really have a look at them and report back. I agree this does not sound right and I told him that the story does not sound right. However, this is government we're talking about and they aren't exactly the most efficient or accurate workers.

The only way they should demand the money is if you mislead them about your income otherwise something doesn't sound right.

This is what I didn't understand, but apparently, there is some huge screw up going on with this person and he apparently signed some document after the trials were over that he was told provided him with all the coverage he needed for the remainder of the trial. But what is happening now is that collection agencies are calling him regarding this matter and he can't get in touch with anyone at legal aid to straighten out the mess. He wasn't working when he applied for, and received, legal aid and then he was incarcerated. He did not have a job until 5 months after he was released.

I asked for him to provide me with the legal papers he signed with legal aid and he did, but I can't make heads or tails of it. He said he calls legal aid and once he goes through 20 minutes of the story and the person on the other end finally "gets it", he thinks they'll straighten it out but nothing happens.

I guess they are demanding repayment for the legal fees? I didn't know they did that, and I know little about legal aid in general, so I thought to ask here.
