Here's the scoop on collection laws if anyone is interested.

1) If you have a delinquent debt of any kind you are obligated by law to communicate with the collection agency. It can be by letter, email, or phone, but you must keep an open line of communication.
2) If you do not do so, they are aloud to contact your work, your family and whoever they feel necessary in order to get in touch with you. However, they cannot disclose the purpose of their call to anyone but you.
3) The collection agency won't do anything to you but try and offer you solutions on how to pay off your debt. If you want to get your debt paid off but just don't think it's possible. Call them up and ask them for suggestions, they are required to offer multiple solutions to your problem.

4) If you simply never make a payment then the bank will destroy your credit rating. No matter how small your debt is, the bank will make sure that noone lends you money for the next 7 years.
5) if you never make a payment and your debt is over a certain amount. This varies from company to company. But I'd say $4K. If you owe over $4K and you simply refuse to pay it, then I would say you are 99% likely to be sued. This means you will have a Judgment on your credit report, which is pretty much equal to bnkrptcy, only instead of not having to pay, the bank reserves the right to garnish your wages, take money directly from your account and repo your house, cars and whatever valuables you own in order to recoup the debt.
6) The only way to avoid this without paying your debt is to basically go off the grid. That means if you work it has to be under the table, and you and your spouse cannot own anything in your name or his/hers. Another way to avoid this would be to leave the country and never come back.
Believe it or not, that is very common.

The best advice I can give you is to offer a settlement. Depending on how far gone your debt is, it's almost always more financially smart for the collection agency to accept a settlement then to sue you.

Charleigh

1)Telus will send you letters saying you owe so much. Then when you get the so called last notice more oe less saying if a payment is not made it will be sent to collections. If it it is sent to collections you then have to work the things out with the collections agnecy.

2)You should have called the hq chances are you would have reached someone there.

3)Becuase telus did not reply does not give you the right not to pay.

4)If this is a debt you do owe you have no choice but to pay.

5)No it won't go away at the worst they will sue you if you don't pay up.If that happens not only would you be sued for the payment but legal fees and interest.

Try and work things out with the collections company.

I currently have the blessing of dealing with MCA. The person I have been dealing with starting off as a human being then regrested dramaticly after I told her I wasn't going to allow her to pressure me into making decisions based on her time line. She did attempt to threaten me with little effect. She spoke of my steller credit rating being compramized, getting calls at work, yadda yadda yadda.

What I really want to know is how far could this collection go? I'm talking about a $500 debt. I tried desperately to deal with Telus to straighten this out before collections. Unfortunately, Telus desided not to return any calls or emails. Personally I don't feel I owe this debt therefore don't really want to pay it. I'm almost ready to pay so my credit rating isn't compramized but I think it may already be. One thought I have to offer to pay if I can get a letter of confirmation that my credit rating not be negatively effected because of this.

What do you think of this. Should I pay should I not. Will they eventually go away if I don't do anything?

I would write them a letter and ask them what it's about. They're a collection agency, which means that they're reporting this on your credit report which is costing you points on your credit score.

Collection agencies have to have a contract with somebody before they can try to collect any thing. It may be they made a mistake and are billing you for somebody else's debt.

The best thing is to contact them and ask them what it's about. They're under obligation of the law to tell you exactly what the debt is about.

>I've got a letter from them saying that I owe 14000CAD , I don't know >for what???
>The letter seems illogically written, their toll free number has an >answering machine..they seem a fake. What's your experience? >And what shoud I do?
>They say they'll give my name to a recovery agent, tarnish my history >etc. I never borrowed a penny!!
>Does someone know about these people? Please help.

Postby montyloree » Thu Feb 09, 2006 12:00:00 AM

I've seen quite a bit of activity with Metropolitan Credit Adjusters in the last few days on this site. People are looking for information regarding Metropolitan Credit Adjusters.

I personally haven't had any dealings with them
If you have, can you let us know.

Is anybody having problems with them?

What's going on?

Thanks
