It's a bit late for a response, but if you are still looking for answers or it may help someone else.

You can send them a registered letter requesting only contact through mail. If they proceed to contact you via telephone, they are violating Federal Collection Laws.

How To Contact

No [collection agency] shall continue to communicate with a debtor:

other than in writing, when the debtor has notified the [collection agency]in writing to communicate in writing only and has provided an address at which the debtor may be contacted;

The statute of limitation for the Province of BC for collecting on a deb is 6 years. You are well passed that in some of those bills that are owed.

My other suggestion would be for you to discuss with a credit counselor all the options that you have for repaying some of the debt, but personally I think if the debt is passed the statute of limitations, then it should be written off by the creditor.

How to settle my debts,

Postby zeekthegeek » Wed May 27, 2009 09:38:28 AM

HI everyone,

How to settle my debts,

A few years ago my wife and I were in Credit Counseling, Do to loss of jobs and 2 major relocations and a temporary separation we ended up faulting on our credit counseling, after 3 years of successful payments and only 2 years left to go. It's been almost 2 years since all of this now, we have settled in our careers and income is stable again and the family is doing much better, however we still have our left over debt and it's beginning to surface itself slowly, fortunately we are in an good place to start dealing with it. We live in British Columbia Canada

I can't pay bills, debts, too high, interest too much, bill collectors calling, consumer protection, bankruptcy option, declare bankrupt,
secured credit card, build credit

We have 4 debts:

Last night we were contacted by A R O in Kelowna, BC for an old Credit Card they were requesting approx $1200 Trans Union has the Debt marked as $935, we didn't get into any details with them, we simply asked for there contact info a ref # and said we would be in touch, I was thinking of sending a registered letter to request contact through mail only and proof of debt, but I know nothing how should I proceed with this?

RBC student loan R9 (got it in 1996) $1737 according to my trans union credit report. Have not been contacted by them yet how should I approach This debt is substantially lower than originally was years ago.

RBC student loan R9 (got in 1996) $3788 according to my trans union credit report. Have not been contacted by them yet how should I approach. This debt is substantially lower than originally was years ago.

Rogers $1787 according to Trans Union, I don't understand this debt it is incredibly high we owed under $500 for arrears and $600 for breach of contact on 2 phones. I swore I found the bill online and the debt was $900ish. Have not been contacted on this debt how should I approach according to Trans Union CBV holds the debt...

I thank everyone so much for there input... I would like to deal with this all ASAP if I broke it all down I could afford to pay these in 12 months assuming I could get away with no interest, and everyone would accept 12 payments.

I was wondering if I could get A R O and Rogers to settle though I do want to challenge CBV on the rogers debt.

Most important thing is that I get this taken care of, I don't want anyone to garnish my wages before I get a chance to deal with it, I am willing to work it all out, but I would like to repair my credit most of this started when I was 19 and I'm 32 I would like to have a positive credit history now, I have a secured credit card I always make my payments on time, I did a 5 year car loan through special financing and never missed one payment and paid the car out in full, I always pay my bills etc on time.. I just need to get these last debts resolved once and for all..

Thanks to all!
