The key to any retail business venture is the 'reach'. How many people are able to recognize a brand? A company's name is one of the most important aspects in determining the success of that business. People always tend to believe in a brand they know rather than a new name in the same line of business. But Rome was not built over a night. Likewise Brand names too are not easily established. The main tool to familiarize a firm is the media. Newspapers, television, radio and the internet are the various forms of media. The newspaper is the oldest and most popular form of media. Newspapers are popular than other forms of media for the simple reason that they are more affordable than any other form of media. Moreover there is no guarantee that the entire target audience visits the same site showing the advertisement. And its common knowledge that advertisements online can get the target audience irritated as it disturbs them when they are looking for something else.

Business houses must be very careful when it comes to advertising on a newspaper. There are a number of factors that contribute to the efficacy of an advertisement. The advertisement should be eye catching and pleasing. The key points should be neatly highlighted. The ad must have a major catch that will attract the customers. That key point is usually a discount offered, freebies, a special prize to the first few customers etc, for a retail business. Whereas when a Real estate firm advertises it should highlight their 'low and fair rates', the advantages of their plot or apartment etc,. Common sense pays in designing advertisements. If the advertisement aims to promote a certain new car that has been recently introduced in the market, it targets the earning population and hence it must have sense enough to advertise in a newspaper that is more popular among the earning population in Canada, and not in a newspaper that talks about the sports.

Newspaper shopping is a type of shopping in which people search for special offers regarding the product or service they require. They look out for well known brands and special offers made by reputed companies. Newspaper ads are of two types. Classified ads and separate slots in the reading pages. While classified ads are more suited for real estate, services, less popular businesses, retail outlets for cosmetics, clothes, supermarket chains and the like advertise on costlier, bigger and exclusive slots in the rest of the columns. But Newspaper Shopping is very popular in Canada and other countries and that makes advertisers face heavy competition. So if the advertisement is to be effective, it must really announce lucrative offers that appeal to people. And details such as the duration for which an offer is valid, which of the branches the customers can approach must be clearly mentioned. But false promises must never be made. As that will tarnish the image of the advertiser.
