Ultimately you have to give the collection agency a motive to do something for you. They usually won't do anything unless they're really motivated.

Sometimes contacting their regulatory body... IE consumer protection will be the stick that you need to get your letter.

It always puzzles me that a collection agency won't give you a receipt for a payment.

Collection Agencies are required to keep strict accounting of what they collect. So they must have record of your payment and should be able to give that to you upon request.

Ah... you've already paid them. Do you have any receipts/cheque stubs etc?

Contact them and Canadian Tire. Also, contact the credit bureau with any proof of payment you have.

Fraid so. Once it hits collection agency status, there is no credit score benefit to paying the debt. What you would need to do is get agreement... in writing... for the collection agency to remove the debt from your report entirely (and I don't trust CRS, even with the letter to remove it), and from the credit card company to change your status from "written off" to "paid in full". The missed payments will still remain, but with the account marked paid in full and the collection removed entirely you should be OK.

CRS will try to push you around and will use illegal tactics. Keep track of all phone calls, who you spoke to, and what was said. Save phone messages if you can.
