It would be a good idea to look real hard for that letter or at least try to see if you can get a copy of it from the agency who gave it to you. However, your prospects may not be too good, especially since they allowed it to be transferred or maybe sold to another agency.
At least dig up any old cancelled cheques that you gave for the settlement from your bank.
It's not up to you to prove that you paid the debt; it's up to the agency to prove you didn't. As well, the debt may be stats barred by now but don't go writing the new agency any letters acknowledging it just in case it isn't. Just deal with them over the phone.
After 3 years, the new agency is almost certainly working the numbers; still, you gotta keep these documents. They're all you have when you pay a collection agency.
