So, does that mean that moving abroad will be a good move from paying debts?

If you're complete broke, then the creditors won't have much to collect.
If the $90K is divided between many creditors, it might not be worth it for the individual creditor to come after you...

Ultimately, if you don't have the means to pay off creditors, they won't be able to collect anyway...

This will trash your credit report... so .. you might as well stay out of country for 6 years...

Having said that, you'll be starting up a whole new credit report when you get to your new country.

I dont have the means. I am completely broke. What about a country such as the US? The 90k is broken up over several different lenders.

i think you've answered all your questions nicely...
do you have the means to repay the debt? i'm not sure that if they got a judgement against you if they would patriate it to another country... especially europe or australia... and... what the laws in those countries would be if the judgement would be taken there...

obviously fpr 90K it might be worth for them to try.... are these all different creditor or one big creditor?

is this all student debt through one institution?

can you answer those questions... that would help

Will debt follow you abroad?

Postby John Smith » Sun Aug 28, 2011 08:28:22 AM

I have 90k in student loan and credit card debt currently. I am considering leaving the country. If I left how likely or probable would it be for the creditors to follow me to my new country. I am considering Europe, Austrailia. Would filing bankruptcy before I leave decrease the likelihood they would come after me for the unpaid student loan debt? How effective and able are student loan companies able to collect on student loans? Additionally, if I applied for a work visa in my new country would they be able to garnish my wages? If I were to stay and wait for the Statue of Limitations SOL and debt to be purged then return to work would the creditors be able to garnish my wages? How long does it take for a creditor to figure out where you work?

Thanks for the advice.
