the problem is ... i've been trying to get out of debt for along time now. i have bills to pay, and i like to go out for beers with my friends. life sucks if you can't do these things.

Have you really learned the lesson about being in debt? Perhaps after taking the kick in the pants for 18mos and paying those debts off you can say you've learned the lesson. Right now you've only seen the immediate results of your frivolous spending. IMO, you haven't yet experienced the consequences of it. That experience will come from paying down your recently accumulated debt over time. Besides, paying this off over 18 months is much better then declaring bankruptcy! If you declare bankruptcy, that action will haunt you for the next 7 years, as it'll be on your credit reports for all future creditors to see for that time frame.
