My apologies, the link I provided wasn't working because of the extra "." at the end of it. Here it is again: http://www.consumerprotectionbc.ca/consumers-debt-collection/how-to-make-a-complaint/debt-collection

Hi Kam,

In this instance, I would advise an alleged BC debtor that they have the ability to notify the collections agency that you are disputing the debt. In order to do this properly, the dispute would need to be done in writing. Our organization has created some handy forms that consumers can use to do this. Here is a link if you want to check it out: http://www.consumerprotectionbc.ca/consumers-debt-collection/how-to-make-a-complaint/debt-collection.

The link also has other information about a BC debtor's rights such as how to request for communication in writing only. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Michelle,

Thanks for your reply...it's appreciated. I did look up the document relating to Collections... but i don't have the patience to read through that legal mumbo jumbo. ( what that means on a cursory level..i did not find anything that would help so far).

But your reply is greatly appreciated.

Maybe you could tell me what if i was in BC ( i have lived in Vancouver for 6 years before i moved to Toronto)... how would one in my shoes deal with this in BC?

16 years later....are you freaking serious??? it just unbelievable

Hi Kam,

I just saw your question and wanted to provide a bit of guidance. Your rights as an alleged debtor fall under the province to which you are currently residing and therefore I would contact your provincial consumer protection Branch. It looks like you are currently in Ontario and I believe you would contact The Ontario Ministry of Government Services. Here's a link: http://www.mgs.gov.on.ca/en/Home/index.htm.

CBV collections trying to collect on 16 year old red camera ticket

Postby kmalikis » Wed Jul 13, 2011 02:09:08 PM

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and looking for some assistance from you folks.

I am flabbergasted about a several calls from an auto dialer to my cell phone, my wifes cell phone and my home phone.

I finally answered and found out that it is a collection company from Winnipeg, Manitoba ( CBV collections). They are trying to collect on a outstanding fine on behalf of Manitoba Justice..in the amount of $264 from 16 YEARS ago!!!!!

I mean what the hell!!!! seriously? i'm pretty sure Murderers and child molesters crimes are long forgotten way before 16 year time frame.

Look i'll be honest..i probably did get the ticket... i moved out of the province..actually lived in 2 different provinces since. Is there seriously no limit or maximum time line that they can collect on this???

any help on how to deal with this would be appreciated... I have worked so hard to have a clean and good credit history over the years.. i don't want this going on my credit report. But it totally infuriates me to have to pay this now.
