When you send a letter to Equifax to conduct an investigation, here is what happens. Equifax will contact the collection agency by phone or by fax to confirm that the debt does exist. Of course, the collection agency will confirm that the debt does exist and that is the end of their investigation. Equifax will then contact you and tell you that they have concluded their investigation and there will be no changes made to your credit report.
Here is what I suggest you do. Contact the collection agency and offer them $100 in full satisfaction of this debt. If they refuse, ask them to take you to Small Claims Court. The likelihood of that happening is nil. For a debt of $671, it isn't worth their time. Stand your ground and don't offer them a penny more. If they accept, ask them to prepare the agreement which in essence says that in payment of $100, this debt is paid in full. Ask them to send it to you under the signature of the person who has authority to sign this agreement on behalf of the collection agency. Then and only then do you pay any money. Before you send them any money, keep a copy of the agreement for your records and make a note of how, when and where you made the payment. After they receive the money, request a release stating that this debt is paid in full. Take a copy of this release and send it to Equifax. This becomes their authority to remove this debt from your credit record.

Good Luck and have a GREAT DAY.
