There are ony 2 types of collectors:

1. Those who break the law.
2. Those who don't make any money.

Both types know what the law is and both know it's not enforced.

Regarding Cajun Man: I"ve been in Niagara Falls a lot. I thought the major industry was tourism.

mmm... then the teachers and senior collectors plainly do not understand the laws.

Either that, or they're banking on the victims not knowing them and by telling the collectors that they're merely "pushing the laws to the limit" they are throwing them to the wolves... and the collectors are also being victimized.

Hey Angella,

Yes we were taught the laws. Employees did whatever they had to to bring in the money... Employers will teach you ways to push it to the limit to collect... some employees take it further and possibly do break the law... there probably the more experienced collectors. The best thing that I learned i s if you are being harrassed by a collection agency just straight out tell them never to call you again. Once you say that to them they are not allowed to call you anymore they'll maybe just mail you threating letters.

Hey, Relentless... as a former insider, perhaps you can answer a curiousity question....?

Are collectors actually taught about the laws? Do they know they're breaking them? Or are they just taught that their victims will not know their rights...?

I use to work for CBV Collections... the employees were cool but management was not. They are a bunch of morons. Gary Sandhu was by far the worst manager I have ever worked for. He discriminates. I hated working so much at CBV collections and am so glad to be out. They harrass people to pay there bill... they call people everyday thru an autodialer....If you don't collect money from your debtors well... management will drive you nuts forcing you to quit. They had threatend to fire me if I didnt bring in enuf outstanding debt payements. I felt like I was in a jail cell working at CBV. Theres my 2 cents about CBV.

Hey Doug Harrie,

I agree with you about credit going into collections before it is due.

I've spoken to several creditors who say that on ocassion they'll put an account into collections in as little as a few weeks after the account is opened.

These are unusual circumstances, but if the creditor feels that the account is going to go delinquent anyway, they will put it into collections.

I spoke to GMAC - Canada who mentioned that they'll start collection proceedings in as little as 1 day after the due date.

It depends on their discretion and how well they think their client will pay.

Harrison,
CBV will usually keep the debt for 1 year depending on the contract. I do not know what province you are in but if you call the local office and ask for client services the person there should be able to answer your question.

How long does CBV usually keep Rogers debts? I am trying to pay and old bill from Rogers for $70 that at least three years old and can't find where to pay it. CBV are not calling me back with the refernece number thats on my credit file in the messages I leave and Rogers says it has gone to collection.

I don't agree with Joans posting that a debt has to be in arears for a long time before it goes to collection 100%. I will tell you why. I cancelled my Bell Mobile phone and was told I would have to buy out the contract and I agreed because it was cheaper to go with Telus in the long run. The final bill for $400 which had a $299 cancellation fee was mailed out on November 11, 2006. Novemeber 17th, 2006 I received the bill, and November 17th, 2006 it was paid on my Visa. November 21, 2006 I received a letter from a collection agency for the bill. Seems Bell sent it to collection by mistake on November 12, 2006. One day after the final bill was made, and 5 days before I even received it.

It was resolved because I am in the know, but a lot of people out there are not. A note as a consumer before anyone takes advise on this site, you may have been advised by a representative of a collection agency who works for the CREDITOR. Always investigate your contracts and agreements first and never take a collection agencies word as gospel. Protect your credit rating first.
