Yes, I remember that story quite vividly, having walked by the building many times. It's also come to mind when I'm in a high rise with full length windows, causing me to wonder what would happen if a person ever accidentally fell against one.

In this case, the lawyer was quite inebriated and had thrown himself against the window several times before it broke. The result of some sort of party or night outing.

Yes. My favorite is " Lawyer Aloft " Toronto - 1996 Darwin Award Nominee
Confirmed True by Darwin

I would say that lawyer really made an impact with his students........

And to think. He was "one of the best and brightest".

I wonder why that is.... ( What a landing )

True, true, all lawyers are not created equal in ability, but then neither are con artists. However, the ones that come on the Canadian Money Advisor are all Darwin Award winners. I wonder why that is.

Thank you all for your comments and wisdom.

I definitely plan on using my lawyer but wanted to know more as I move on. I don't want to sit on the sidelines and watch - I want to know and understand so I can be involved in our approach.

I will dig deeper for sure and read up on documents you suggested.

Thanks again :-)

Yes. Educating yourself is definitely a good idea. So is having all the facts.

And if a person does not have all the facts: Then You only know a fool until he opens his mouth :-)

But then again:

It's better to be thought a fool than open your mouth and prove it.

The vexation of a fool is known at once, but the prudent ignores an insult.

Take my advice Prescott: Educate yourself, use a lawyer if you feel you need one,
but don't leave everything up to him. Unless he's your Uncle...

Educating yourself is definitely a good idea - up to a point. But the last-do-it-yourself lawyer we had was Stephen Hoddinott. He saved a small amount in personal legal fees, but now has to pay a fortune to the other side's lawyers.

He forgot the first rule they tell you in every law class: He who tries to defend himself has a fool for a client.

Hey Prescott:

I'm not going to pretend I know anything about divorce. I've been happily married to the same woman for over 20 years. I have though had my fair share in the court system. Both in criminal and civil.

I'm not a lawyer, however one thing I have found helpful throughout the years, Educate yourself on the topic that you are fighting for. In your case, I would first start brushing up on the The Divorce Act. http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/D-3.4/page-1.html

If you have decided to elect a lawyer to represent you, that's fine. At least you will have a better understanding for yourself if you do some of your own personal investigating. Maybe even question why he intends to approach your case in a certain way. Or better yet, you may be able to answer your own questions: IE:

"Does the divorce act override the bankruptcy act? Does this even matter?"
"Can she garnish portion of my pension cheques?"

If you're looking for quick answers for free, try going through the acts. Also, Go back to your trustee.
If your trustee says it's a provable case and you're basing some of your actions on his position on the matter, then go back and ask him why he says that ? What is it that he knows that you don't ?

No matter what the subject, you need to dig deep. Only you will be willing to work the hardest for yourself.

I'm not sure if this is of any use to you or not...........

Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act
http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts/G-2/FullText.html

Then again there's also option B:
If you're not willing to learn, just sit back and pay your lawyer a small fortune...
Whatever the Ex doesn't get from you, your lawyer will.....
