TD CANADA TRUST -- Offers Secured Visas.

Even after bankruptcy, TD CANADA TRUST told me that I could apply for a secure VISA. I wish CIBC would offer secure Visas for those who were bankrupt -- AEROPLAN.

And what about when you're applying for a mortgage, student loan, or line of credit? Do you have to provide them with your SIN? CIBC asked me for it for a secured Visa because they said the deposit will create interest (doesn't make sense to me though). Anyways, I gave it to them since I needed a credit card (didn't have one at that time). I used to give my SIN to whoever asked then found out all the frauds and identity thefts happening that made more cautious.

Even cell phone companies and landlords ask for your SIN "to check your credit". Do they really need your SIN to check credit history? Honestly there should be some rules in place concerning who and under what circumstances they can ask you for that VERY sensitive piece of information!! I do believe some companies and institutions are asking too much. And who knows how they handle your information!!

Social insurance number when you apply for a secured credit card?

Postby bebiesean » Sat Apr 03, 2010 02:20:52 AM

Do you need to give your social insurance number when you apply for a secured credit card?

The answer is no. The law does not require you to present your social insurance number to any banks. Your social security number is private and used for tax purposes only so you do not have to share this number to anyone else save your employer, Human Resources, Revenue Canada and Social Development Canada.
