Hey Darlene,
Those pesky collection agents....(understatement)

Call your local Ontario Consumer Protection branch and explain your situation to them.

Calling your neighbour would be a violation of your Federal Privacy rights with PIPEDA...(The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) is fully in effect as of January 2004)

SEE Federal Privacy Commissioner

If they've broken a law while collecting you, make sure to document it as you've done and tell the collection agency to back off while you're disputing and investigating their activities.

Let us know how it goes.!!

I too have been harrassed by a collection agency. I know how many times they call, and with me it has been more than 10 times a day. This was back in 2002, when I finally told them to go ahead and take me to court, I had recordings of the calls I also had a log book of when the calls came in. To top that I had my mother, who the collection agent, believeing it was me, fully discussed my information with her. All the while my mother was telling them, my daughter is in hospital, I`m her mother, they did not believe her.
Now in 2006, I have a knock come to the door, it`s my neighbor, he hands me his phone telling me the call is for me. When I get on the phone, the agent, promptly tells me that I owe and he wants it now. I tried asking him where he had gotten this number, and that I do NOT live at this number, and tell him NOT to call this number again. So far we have logged 6 calls, 4 calls the first day, and 2 today. This after he told me he was going to send me the information by mail, so far no mail, only phone calls to my neighbor.
The agent threatened me with going to court, I told him to go ahead, that was what I wanted them to do.
What are my rights in this? I live in Ontario, and need to know asap, so when he calls again I can better deal with him???

Harassment

Postby fed up » Tue May 02, 2006 12:00:00 AM

These people are violating every law - they have an automatic dialer that calls me at 7 am and at 10 pm - if I answer the phone and the recording comes on, it has my telephone line seized and I can not hang up. I thought those tactics were against the law?

I told them once when there was a real person on the other end of the line that I had paid the 407 bill but they continue to harass me.

I am fed up.

They call on weekends, week days, sometimes 2 and 3 messages a day on my answering machine.
