Well, here in newfoundland the provincial government has turned over deliquent student loans to them. Now, I pay mine and I called CRA and they told me that I am clean. It is my common law husband who they want, not me.

Call them and find out what they want.

No one -- not even the government -- can go into your bank account legally and take funds without a judgment.

I can't think of why CRA would be calling you with respect to a student loan. They do hold your income tax returns and GST if you owe money so it might be related to that.

Yes well I check out the phone number and it is CRA. No, have received no mail at all from them.

Are you sure it was CRA that called? That is rather strange. Did you get any mail from CRA before the telephone contact? What number did they leave when they called? I would be highly suspect of this and it could be a collection agency up to something. In my experience CRA does not call without first communicating in writing.

CRA also has limited involvement with student loans. Student loans can lead to a lien being placed against your tax refund but that is usually it.

Student Loans and Revenue Canada

Postby Darlene » Thu Jan 21, 2010 03:39:57 PM

Can someone answer this question for me please regarding student loans and revenue canada. I live in Newfoundland and I have student loans which I am paying on and I am clean with Revenue canada I owe them nothing. It's my common law husband who has 1 student loan in default. He is paying on one student loan but defaulted on the other. Let me explain further. He is paying on one student loan still but, when he the amount he is paying is supposed to be for the 2 student loans together. He sent letters explaining this because this is all he could afford. He is only working part time (20)hours a week and sometimes less than that for $9.65 an hour. Anyway the student loan went and sent his other loan to Revenue canada. He will be calling them tomorrow as they called and he was not home. My question is can they take money out of my bank account (it is not in his name) which has my name only on it. We file common law together all the time as we are a couple living together. Am I responsible for his loan too???? Can someone answer this for me please???

Thanks so much
