Yes, I've drafted another validation of debt demand along with a cease and desist and will be sending it tomorrow. I need to find out where this is coming from and if they don't want to provide validation, they need to quit harassing me and file a lawsuit. I doubt they will do so.

I'm not one to skip out on my debts and as a result have never had credit issues. This will be the only R9 on my report. I was able to be approved for a mortgage on my own credit, I've paid off three car loans in full (and ahead of schedule) on my own, I've got R1 credit on my credit line and my Visa and keep my Visa limit low. However, by the sounds of it I will never be able to get this off my credit report. I don't see the point in fighting it when the rest of my report is good.

If the C/A continues to threaten me after this next letter, I will contact the Registrar. Thanks so much for the information.

Yes, they gave me a name that I do not recognize and when I did a search online, found it to be a home decor place located in Alberta. I am in Ontario. I've also asked them for all validating information, including the contract where this debt was incurred, when it was incurred, etc., basically asking for a full history so that I can properly investigate this claim. I'm just not going to give money to anyone who says I owe something. I need proof. Furthermore, if they give me the original creditor, then I can go to them but, apparently, this collection agency bought this debt. Getting supporting information from them to validate their claim is like trying to get blood from a stone. I'd much rather go to the original creditor, find out from them what this is about....but I don't know who it is.

Did they tell you who the creditor is?

Thanks Avg_Joe, I'm currently trying to do that. It's gone to a collection agency and I've already asked for debt validation from them but they are not providing it and are instead just sending threatening voicemail/letters. I need that validation to properly investigate.

I have no recollection of acquiring this debt which is odd because I would remember incurring a debt of over $2300.00. I am worried that I may have been a victim of fraud by a family member and because of it being family am reluctant to go to the police and would much rather, if it is the case and it is fraud from a family member, negotiate with the original creditor and fix the credit score and then deal with this matter with the family member separately. I can't know any of this unless the C/A sends the information I require to determine the source of this alleged debt.

Also, I don't plan on asking for additional credit for another 2-3 years - when I plan to purchase or lease another vehicle.

Do you plan to apply for credit again someday, if so then you need to settle this debt? I would find out if you actually own this debt and if you do when did you get this purchase.

So there is no reason to even settle then as there's no difference between a paid debt or an unpaid debt on the credit report? Also, all of my other debts are serviced on time and I don't have any history of unpaid debt.

Hi there,

I am new to the credit thing, having had a good rating and no prior issues with lat-paying debt. My issue now deals with a collection agency that is claiming I owe somewhere in the neighbourhood of $2300.00 for a purchase I do not recall making with a creditor I have NEVER heard of. I am currently disputing this and requesting validation of this debt.

I am obviously concerned about my credit and this brings up a question that comes to mind. If it turns out that I am responsible for whatever reason (although I would not forget making that large of a purchase) and I settle with them, would my credit rating remain at an R9 for this bad debt for 6 years or does it get re-evaluated to an R7?

How does this work? I've never had a problem getting or paying off a loan, and apply for a have a mortgage on my own credentials. This would be a major blow to my credit rep, so I just need to understand how the system works.

Thanks.

How much money you can expect to collect depends on how old the debt is.

If you call in a collection agency when the debt is three months past due, you can expect to collect almost 74 percent of the debt. After six months, the chance of receiving payment drops to 56 percent. If you leave debt collection to linger for a year or more, your chance of collecting is only 29 percent, according to the Commercial Law League of America.

Lesson learned: Make your first phone call to the debt dodger the first day after a payment is due.
