I was told directly from a Tran’s union reprensentive that they keep good items in your credit file for 20 years. I believe you can have the items removed from your credit file after six years, especially if you do not have the accounts any longer.

I have had items removed from my Transunion credit report after 6 years they haven't told me anything about 20 years. I sent them a copy of a letter of information that I recieved from a lawyers office stating that it had to be removed because legally they could only keep it for 6 years. Where did you get the 20 years from I haven't heard that from anyone? Why would you want them removed if they are in good standing?

They keep it for up to 20 years even though the Stature of Limitations has issued that our right is to have it removed after 6 years?

JustGord,

I will address your Issue B.

Equifax and TransUnion handle closed accounts differently. Equifax keep the records on your file for up to six years from last activity date. If you find any record with last activity date of more than six year (this maybe possible) you can request Equifax to remove these records.

TransUnion on the other hand, keep the records for a period of 20 years. So therefore, your record with 1994 will disappear by 2014, 2002 record will disappear by year 2022, and so on and so forth.

Hope this helps.

HELP! Letter to Equifax/Transunion

Postby JustGord » Fri Oct 09, 2009 10:29:16 AM

I am sending letters to Transunion & Equifax to request something be cleaned up on my account, but wanted to get your advice first. There is another question as well, but I'll stick to this one first:

Issue A
This is for a single $8,000 loan. The loan was defaulted and reported to my credit profile on 02/01/2003 (It showed the Opened Date as 02/02/2003). But in addition to this, once the collection agency took over the debt, they entered a new record on my credit profile, Opened date as 07/04/2005.
My first question is, The initial debt has been removed from my profile since it is over 6 years and my rights in the SoL ensure it gets removed. But the collection agency debt is still there. In my letter I am asking it to be removed too, since it is not a new debt, it is a debt tied to one that is past the SoL 6 year mark. Is this correct, or is the collection agency a new debt?
My second question; Is the collection agency breaking any of my rights by "updating" the record on the credit profile but re-entering the balance date. It seems every couple months, they re-enter the balance date, the last update is 09/23/2009.

Issue B
I have a ton of enteries on my credit profile, some that are [Closed] some that are [Open] that are all in good standing, show OK payments for the 2 year history, but they are old, like 10/01/1994, 12/01/2002, 01/01/1996. Should I ask that they get removed? Is it a bad thing they are on there, or is it a good thing?

I appreicate your reposnses.
