Perhaps it'd be wise for those interested to review this thread for a detailed answer to the "Date of Last Activity" question. Particular attention should be paid to Raymond's post on Nov 11th/08.

As far as I have been told that if the bad debt is still on your credit bureau and you make a payment it will change the date of last activity. The credit bureaus purge items from 6 years after the date of last activity, not the date from when it was open. If it is still on your credit bureau and the activity date is after 6 years, do not pay. Get the process started with getting the item off.

Can anyone else verify what I am saying.

From all the reading and research that I've done to date, the answer is no the account should NOT reappear on your credit file. The 6 year limitation is from the date of default (unless you renew the limitation period before the SOL is up); given that you are past the SOL then you should be in the clear.

That said, you'd be wise to offer these creditors next to nothing to settle these accounts. Five cents on the dollar would be the most I'd consider given that the debt is so far gone.

6 year period

I need clarification on this. Once 6 years hit, the bad debts purge off the credit report. If I try to settle the debt or even pay in full after they are purged off the report,

Will that particular account go back on the report as bad debt since there is new activity on the account?
