Here's a clip I found amusing on the fuel efficency of the Toyota Prius Hybrid - starts around 4:40 on the clock

Makes it kind of hard to argue with car makers in investing massive R&D in fuel efficent or alternative fuel cars when oil is cheap. Also I noticed GM had a big display this year at the Toronto auto show talking about how they are so keen on electric and hybrid cars. GM just seems to time everything so badly... Big SUV's when gas is expensive and then boasting electric and hybrids when gas is cheap.

I agree, with oil so cheap its going to be hard to convince people to buy hybrids. I heard GM might layoff an additional 40,000 workers.

Okay I'll bite, I am a car guy.

Why would making cars that run off ethanol and other sources solve GM's problems, especially when oil is at record lows?

4 million US jobs would be lost and other associated businesses...This would be like you having your right hand smashed with a 50 pound sledge hammer and you are right handed pitcher on a professional baseball team. It would cripple our already weak economy to the point of gasping for air. We can not afford this kind of lose now we can start making fuel efficient cars that run off ethanol and other sources that can bring GM back in play so there is still hope .
