WOW, anonymous and I are in the exact same boat. NCO contacted me today about a traffic fine from 1989. They said they have sent me letters, none of which I have received. Apparently the last letter sent was December 2008 to my current address, I did not receive such letter. I looked for information on teh SOL and found this:

A March 4, 2003 decision of the Supreme Court of Canada, Markevich v. The Queen decided that limitations applied to CRA as well as other Crown proceedings. Section 32 of the Crown Liability and Proceedings Act and Section 3 (5) of the BC Limitation Act barred collection of the Federal and Provincial portions of the debt since the debt was more than 6 years old. This decision was "overruled" when parliament amended section 222 of the Income Tax Act to provide for a 10 year limitation period.
Collins v. Canada, 2005 FCA 1431 CanLII.

It sounds to me like there is a statute of limitations on provincial and federal debts. But I could be wrong.

Traffic tickets are my favorite pet peeve.

There are no laws or contract in place saying that the government can use a collection agency to collect traffic tickets...

They're just doing it 'cause...

I hate that

Unanimous... contact consumer protection in Ontario and ask them.
Let us know what you find out.

Traffic Act Fines

Postby Unanimous » Mon Jan 12, 2009 05:39:27 AM

What is the SOL on outstanding fines ie Traffic Act. NCO contacted me in regards to subject fine which supposedly occured in 1990. I have never recieved any correspondence in this matter and when I asked her where the correspondence was sent, she replied with an adress that I havent lived in since 1990. Can you shed some light on this for me.....
Thanks
