They would have to sue you and it's very unlikely they will. If your not working and you can prove it, that will make it easier to settle your debt. If they ask you if you a bank account just tell you have no use for a bank account since you are not working. I wouldn’t settle any debt till you find out the limitation. I am not a 100% for sure but I think you might be able to get away not paying this debt. I would not listen to ARO for simple reason they will feed you a bunch of lies.

A few years ago I got a mortage with no problems also a Line of credit for a large amount. Just a few months ago i needed to do some banking which required my bank to do a credit check and they said my rating was very good. But i'll check again with equifax and transunion.
Do you know if these collection agencies can withdraw money from my account? Say they got permission from a court. I'm in between jobs now and can't afford to pay this and its so old as you say, I don't know if they are now legally entitled to it.

I dealt with ARO before and they are a sneaky bunch and can be rude. I would check your credit report with Equifax and Trans union, because if this debt is 1995 it should not be reporting. This debt might be so old you might not have to pay it.

Hi Joe, thank you ..

Yes I had no problems renewing my license or registering a vehicle although I don't own one now. When I did, they never mentioned anything to me about this fine.
When they called they left a voice message with their number. I looked the number online and it was a collection agency (ARO). I was curious what this was all about so i called them back which is when they told me about the fine. I don't believe they have my current address or employment and I didn't give it out, I just said I would look into it.

I would look into this matter. I don't if the laws changed after the year 2000.Did you renew your license or register a vehicle since then? I know now in Nova Scotia good luck trying to renew a vehicle or license if you for any traffic violation or any motor vehicle violation. If you have and the motor vehicle never said anything maybe they can’t do anything because it’s before the year 2000.I’m sure you will get your answer on here anytime soon, the response time on here is great.

Collection Agency Called About OLd Debt

Postby sam3777 » Thu Jan 08, 2009 02:22:06 AM

Hi, I'm hoping somoene can help me.

I just received a call a few days ago from a collection agency telling me
I owe about $1200 for a Ontario traffic offence back in 1995.
Honestly I cannot recall but the agent confirmed my name and address I was living at that time.
I have moved around alot since then and returned to Ontario from BC about 5 years ago. This is the first they have contacted me since moving back.

Can someone tell me if there is a statute of limitations if not what should I do? Sorry if this has been answered already, I'm just kind of stressing out over this and could really use some advice.

Thankyou
