Vitzbitz,

Your right, I made an error on that reply. It’s Equifax that removes accounts that are positive or negative that are closed and over six years old.

I do find Tran’s union to be very sloppy. I find Equifax is more sophisticated. If Tran’s union wanted too they could make changes to their software.

Yes they keep files up to 20 years they say this because they are keeping stuff positive to help your credit history. I have that in writing from them, as I to this day still have a 1997 paid debt attached to all my recent accounts. Which in turn should have not been disclosed with the rest of my R1 revolving ,as it is not accurate information, which should have been purged 6 years ago and could be harmful to my credit rating or my chances of getting credit. It's a catch 22 they are walking on a fine line they see who catches and complains and who doesn't. I would complain and fight to take it off there positive or not because stuff that old should be gone and not be permissable for any lender to see.

This is true as I spent 1/2 a day calling transunion over other things and YES they keep positive things on your file for 20 years and purge any negative items after 6 years. I asked numerous transunion employees this and got the same response.

I don't think you're right here Joe, Transunion is pretty up front about their policies. Negative items disappear after 6 (the law says 7 doesn't it?) and positive stay on much longer (what's the harm, however?).

I've got positive stuff on my TU report with a date of last activity dating back 9 years.

No item stays on your credit report for 20 years.Whether you pay a debt or not it has to come off your file 6 years from last date of activity,it's the law.

Okay so I got a bit of information.. on how they report.
Items in good standing remain on your Transunion report for 20 years.
Items in negative standing remain 6 years and purge.
Negative items include...
Accounts with Negative Payments, collections etc... Anything that has a negative impact on your report.
Transunion Hard Inquiries -
Hard Inquires remain on your credit profile 6 YEARS from the date of when they were made.

I noticed that I had a HARD inquiry on my report from CRS.
I told the fellow at transunion that I did not authorize this Hard inquiry..

Authorize = request for them to conduct this inquiry
Therefore if I did NOT request it ... it needs to be removed.
He stated that I need to contact CRS (haha.. yeah right) and have them remove the inquiry... HAHhAHhahahha good luck.
He did say it was illegal for them to do this if it was not authorized.
OH brother.
Anyways.. I will update if I find out any more info.

Transunion claims they leave positive information for 25 years. Not sure how much trouble it would be to get them to remove it... or why you would bother if it isn't affecting your score. It may be more hassle than it's worth.

I'm phoning them bright and early so I will update everyone on my Transunion experience.
And I will ask a million questions... so I can get some answers for all of us.
